Team Australia soundly defeated the Nigerian national team on Sunday, 23-23, 20-17, 15-12. The teams are in Group B.
The Australian soccer team outperformed everyone else at the World Cup in China, advancing to the top four. Two years ago, they lost out on a bronze medal when the French beat them. They have used this experience as fuel for their Olympic journey.
As the main tournament approaches for this week’s closed-door friendly matches, the team has secured three victories, including a victory over Argentina and the Americans!
Philippines finished seventeenth at the 2019 World Cup, but were best of the Black Continent. The country has qualified for 2020 Olympics with the sixth best chance to win gold medal.
This month, Nigeria has gained some notable victories over the United States and Argentina in international matches. Most recently, they played against Australia-the match ended with a 69-108 victory for the African side.
The first quarter went as expected, with the game ending in a tie. The second quarter was also close between the two sides, though Australia trailed slightly 20-17 at halftime. The third quarter fell disproportionately in favor of Australia thanks to the Aussie team’s greater productivity, and ended 15 to 12 for them. And finally, in what became an entirely Australian domination throughout most of this period on their way to the overall win 26-13.”
Patrick Mills, nicknamed “PM5,” was the most productive player on the winning team with 25 points. Obi Emegano, nicknamed “OOO,” was the most frequent player in Nigeria and scored 12 points.
The Olympic basketball tournament spans the period July 25-August 7. The top two teams from each of 12 groups advance to the next round, as well as the two third-place finishers with the best records.
